Justice for Haiti

This week inSpiral has committed £50 from the inSpiral Trust to the Haiti Charity Walk to help alleviate human suffering in the tiny Carribean nation of Haiti. A myriad of charities and NGOs have sprung up in the two and a half weeks since the earthquake, and are responding in various ways to the needs of victims in this devastated region. Inevitably, the scale of the crisis and the disaster-relief effort have triggered a series of debates over how much of the funds are reaching the individuals who are most in need, and are raising concerns over how effective international aid is in creating timely and innovative solutions to the problems of mass-shelter, food, clean water, emergency medical care and the restoration of essential infrastructure.

What many people do not realise is that despite the earthquake, Haiti owes crushing payments for "dictator debt" run up years ago. Even as aid flows in to Haiti's desperate communities, money is flowing out to pay off the country's crushing debt -- over $1 billion in unfair debt racked up years ago by unscrupulous lenders and governments.

The call for full cancelation of Haiti's debt is building steam across the world. Let's raise a massive global call for justice, mercy and common sense for the people of Haiti in this hour of tragedy. Avaaz and partners will deliver the call for debt relief directly to the summit -- click here to sign the petition, and then take the time to pass the Avaaz message on to friends.
