Durian
Durian is an exotic delicacy revered as 'King of the Fruits', a title believed to be based on its terrific appearance and powerful odour. It has a delicious yet distinct flavour that is variously described as having notes of vanilla, banana, papaya, caramel, custard or even, some say, onion. An extraordinary delicacy, highly prized for its aphrodisiac properties, durian is high in tryptophan, the 'happy nutrient'. It also contains a high amount of vitamin C, potassium and is a good source of carbohydrates, proteins and healthy fats. The durian is the fruit of the Durio and Malvaceae family. Each fruit can grow as long as 30 centimetres and typically weighs 1-3 kilograms. The fresh fruit has an overpowering aroma that makes it difficult to import and, therefore, source outside of its native countries: Brunei, Indonesia and Malaysia. The durian is native to Brunei, Indonesia and Malaysia. It is a tropical fruit which cannot grow in temperatures below 22°C. It is also a seasonal fruit which means it is typically only available from June to August. This means the price of durian is high compared with other fruits. Durian fruit is traditionally used to flavour a wide variety of sweets such as candy, ice cream and milkshakes. At inSpiral Lounge we make a delicious Durian Colada which is a nutritious combination of durian, pineapples, mangoes, dates, banana and raw coconut. We are proud to be one of the only UK distributors of 100% natural, raw, freeze-dried Durian, which is of the highly prized Mon Thong variety, widely regarded by connoisseurs as the most delicious, highly flavoured of the various species.
